Last Day

Economics teacher Laura Young (centre) with Y13 students who have been 'Living Below the Line'

Today is my last day on the challenge, and I’m not planning to have a feast of all my favourite foods tomorrow, but to try and meet my needs without waste.

Watching others waste food has been quite frustrating when I have such a limited budget.

If we all only bought and used what we need, food prices would fall for everyone – there is not a global food shortage just unaffordable prices driven by overconsumption in rich countries.

Teacher Laura's Day 3

“The most startling effect of the past 3 days has been the effect on my energy and concentration levels.

Although I only feel mildly hungry, the lack of nutrients has left me feeling very lethargic and unable to concentrate as well as usual.

Although my working day has been unaffected, my evenings have not been very productive as I am too tired to stay awake past 9pm, very unusual for me! I can’t imagine how exhausting it must be if people live on such as diet and have to do manual work, or walk long distances to get food and drink.

Teacher Laura's Day 2

“Had a bit of a headache today, may be more reliant on tea and coffee than I realised.  I also forgot to bring a tin opener and couldn’t find one to open my spaghetti for lunch - a very clear example of having the commodity but lacking the equipment to make use of it!

I’ve also been asked today if my 9 year old daughter is being fed the same diet.  She isn’t, because I would have felt guilty to deprive her of the food she is used to – upsetting to think that so many mothers have to do this every day around the world.”

Teacher Laura's Day 1

"Missing cups of tea already! Did my food shop and really didn't enjoy walking past all my usual favourites, it took ages to try and figure out how to stretch my budget. I was very aware of how nice other people's shopping looked."

What is 'Living Below the Line'?

Live Below the Line is a campaign that's challenging the way people in the UK think about poverty - and making a huge difference.

The Sheffield High students are looking for sponsorship and donations to support their efforts and they will be holding a school assembly after the Easter break to pass on their experiences to the younger girls in school.

It also fits in well with their Economics course, as they have been looking at poverty and development.

For more on this campaign, please see the Below the Line Website at https://www.livebelowtheline.com/uk?lang=en

It looks like quite a challenge!
